About Us

The Japan Karate Association (JKA) is a corporation recognized by the Ministry of Education in Japan. It was founded on March 20, 1950, by Master Funakoshi Gichin under the name Nihon Karate Kyokai, which translates to Japan Karate Association in English.

On April 10, 1958, the Association was officially incorporated by the Ministry of Education of Japan, receiving the title Shadanhoujin - Nihon Karate Kyokai. With a professional approach to promoting the art of Karate-do, the JKA initiated an Instructor's Course Program, producing some of the most renowned figures in the Karate world. As these qualified instructors spread across continents, the JKA expanded internationally. Today, many of the largest Shotokan Ryu organizations are led by graduates of the JKA’s Instructor’s Program. The JKA now has branches in over 100 countries and is collectively known as the JKA World Federation. The JKA branch in India is a proud member of this global network.
